"Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?" (Job 38:32, KJV) Critics suggest that the KJV translators left מזרות (mazzarot) untranslated because the translators, unlike modern translators, did not know that the word refers to constellations. This charge is false. The margin in the 1611 KJV says "Or, the twelue signes". This obviously refers to the zodiac. The interpretation that מזרות refers to the zodiac is supported by Barnes' Notes on the Bible, Clarke's Commentary on the Bible, Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible, and Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary. The NKJV, ESV and NRSV also transliterate the word as "Mazzaroth". The KJV transliterated the word in the main text and provided a marginal note in keeping with article 6 of the Instructions to the Translators, which says, "No marginal notes at all to be affixed, but only for the explanation of the Hebrew or Greek words, which cannot, without some circumlocution, so briefly and fitly be expressed, in the text."
